The hamlet of Oakdale is within the town of Islip. Oakdale's origins are rooted in the gilded age of the 1800's, when wealthy elites began building mansions on the South Shore. Snedecor's Tavern, located in modern Connetquot River State Park, was founded in 1820 and soon drew wealthy industrial age elites who enjoyed hunting, fishing and revelry in the area. The Vanderbilt family is the most famous of these industrial age elites. Vanderbilt's former home now hosts Dowling College.
Visitors to Oakdale will appreciate the variety of activities available. In addition to Connetquot River State Park's hiking, horseback riding and fishing, visitors can enjoy the beaches nearby in Islip and ample shopping and dining opportunities. Once home to an artists' colony, Dowling College's campus also features the Anthony Giordano Gallery for contemporary art that visitors will not want to miss.
